    Get a Voki now!
Journey to the Center of the Earth
Objective: Demonstrate your understanding of the structure of Earth and processes that occur within Earth by creating an illustrated children’s book, personal diary, comic strip or other teacher-approved product about a journey to the center of Earth.
You will create an illustrated story to describe a journey to the center of Earth. As you travel toward the center, you will describe Earth’s structure and properties, processes that occur inside Earth, as well as how scientists learn about Earth. Think about what you would see, feel, and hear during the journey. For each stop on the journey, you should include an illustration to accompany written text. Remember that someone, after reading your product,
should be able to understand the relationships between the interior and the surface of Earth.
Be creative when writing your story, but remember to keep your descriptions and explanations scientifically accurate. In addition, the journey should include at least the following stops:
Surface of Earth: Begin your journey here in your own town. Identify and describe the different types of rock and explain them.
Inside the crust: Explain the rock cycle and point out examples of the rock cycle in progress. Explain how scientists determine the age of Earth’s structures.
Lithosphere: Describe the materials and conditions found here. Explain the plate structure of the lithosphere and how the lithosphere changes over time due to continental drift. Identify examples of the rock cycle.
Asthenosphere: Describe the materials and conditions found here. Describe how this part of Earth affects the lithosphere.
Mesosphere: Describe the materials and conditions found here and how this part of the mantle differs from the asthenosphere.
Outer Core: Describe the materials and conditions found here.
Inner Core: Describe the materials and conditions found here.
After you finish your book, explain what you learned from this project.
Write a paragraph describing how the information provided in your book enables a reader to answer the Unit 5 Question “How does the interior of Earth affect its surface?”
Use the rubric provided to score your finished product.
Write a letter to your teacher that provides justification for your score with reference to specific criteria from the various rubric levels.
